What did Western Expansion mean for Natives? |
The westward expansion changed many things for the colonists, the land, and the natives. The expansion to the colonists followed their idea of manifest destiny, they had a right to this land. However, no one really has a right to conquer land that is already inhabited and has a structure to it. This expansion did not take into account the Natives that already lived there and as a result, there were many conflicts. As anyone should, the Natives did not like that the colonists were once again, claiming their land as their own and wanting the Natives to adjust their lifestyle to a Western European lifestyle. The colonists still had no consideration for the Natives.
This expansion also led way to a new category of people, the Californios. The Californios were people who lived in California and spoke Spanish. |
