What are Labor Unions? |
With the rise of industry, there was also a rise in unfair treatment inside of factories. This unfair treatment was spread across the United States to every group of people. Due to the unfair treatment, labor unions began to be formed. There were a few labor unions at this time directly toward latinx in the workforce such as casa del obrero mundial, which translates directly to the House of the Working World, and the Caballeros de Labor, directly translated to the Horses of Labor. Another Latinx based union was the Confederación de uniones obreras mexicanas. These groups worked to help better the lives and working conditions of Latinos.
Another labor union present was the American Federation of Labor. This federation however did not support immigrants and neither did the Knights of Labor however, the American Federation of Labor was discriminatory whereas the Knights of Labor were not. The Knights of Labor allowed anyone to join regardless of race. An interesting labor union that came into existence was the Japanese Mexican Labor Association. The Japanese and Mexicans in the States realized they were receiving the same unfair treatment and teamed up to create this association. |
