What is the 19th amendment? |
The 18th amendment banned the production, consumption, and selling of alcohol in the United States. This movement was led by white women during this time because their husbands were drinking alcohol religiously and not being very good people because of it. Due to this, these women decided the best thing to do was outlaw alcohol in its entirety. Another movement to arise from this amendment/movement was the Women's Christian Temperance Movement. This movement stressed the enforcement and assimilation to Christianity.
Prohibition was tried again with Native tribes later in time but with the same idea behind the 18th amendment. Once again, the movement had the exact same result as it did the first time. The 19th amendment gave white women the right to vote. It is important to emphasize the white portion because Latinx, Asian-Pacific, and Natives did not receive the right to vote until many years after the 19th amendment was ratified. It is often easy to lump all women together but this should not be done as many women were not represented, fought for, and were thought less of. |
