What tribes did the Americans consider civil? |
The demographics of Natives in America were changing rapidly as America was beginning to develop into its own country. The Natives were already pushed out of their land beginning with the arrival of colonists and conquistadors in the 1500's. By now, after the American Revolution, the Americans had given a liking to certain tribes that they considered friendly. They called these tribes the 5 civilized tribes and they were the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, Creek, and Chickasaw. What set these tribes apart from others was they assimilated to western European culture faster and easier than other tribes and for this, they were deemed civilized. Tribes that were not considered civilized by western European standards were regarded as savages and they did not conform to the standards but maintained their own culture, or tried to at least.
Both the Jay Treaty and XYZ Affair indirectly affected and involved the Natives. Both of these pertained to Americans and their involvement with other countries and as learned through history, other countries involvement and relationships affected how the Americans treated the Natives. The Treaty of Canandaigua was between the Six Nations, otherwise known as the Iroquois to try to maintain peace with Americans. The Iroquois were still present in America but were not regarded as one of the civilized tribes even though their unwritten constitution was the basis of the United States constitution. |
