What was a Slave State and a Free State? |
During the time before the Civil War there were many problems with which states were slave states and which states were not. This led to the Compromise of 1850 which split the country in half and said any state below the line is a slave state and any state above the line is a free state. The Native population was not taken into consideration with this. Their land was still taken away in mass amounts and their population distribution across the country was changing rapidly. The Natives never moved voluntarily but were always forced to do so. Also, with regards to slave states, Natives were still slaves at this time in some areas and this affected them as well.
