What was the Kansas- Nebraska Act? |
There were many different acts implemented that were not good towards people of color. At this time there was a lot tension for slaves wanting to be free but not being able to. This led to the fugitive slave act. However, it has been noted that the Natives at times, helped the enslaved people be free. Many times the Native tribes were situated near swamps and this is where the enslaved people would travel to and the Natives would help hide them.
This is not the only thing that affected the Natives, the Kansas Nebraska Act did as well. This act turned their homes into a war zone over slavery. As well as take away their land. Now, it is a common misconception that the Emancipation Proclamation freed all of the slaves, it did not. Slaves at the time were Natives and African Americans as well. These people were not free because of this document because it did not guarantee that everyone would follow it, especially in this South. |
