What were the 13th, 14th, and 15th, amendments labeled as? |
The 13th amendment, in theory, was supposed to abolish all slavery ... this did not hold true. A significant part of the 13th amendment states that slavery is okay if there is a punishable crime. This can and did cause many problems as people then begin getting arrested for anything and thus creating free slave labor. This holds true for prisons and a concept called prison slavery. This slavery is not protected by the 13th amendment and is allowed. This holds problems for any person of color as they are targeted more as systematic racism is still present.
The 14th amendment was defining citizenship and granted citizenship to Africans, who then became African Americans. However, this amendment did not apply Natives. Natives were not considered citizens until 1924, which is over 50 years after this amendment was passed. The 15th amendment was supposed to grant the right to vote without restrictions to race, color, or previous servitude. Again, this held true for African Americans but even then there were still problems. Natives, Latinx, and Asian-Pacific Americans were not given the right to vote until many years later. The 15th amendment did not apply to these groups nor women. |
