What is the Panama Canal? |
As the United States was expanding more, there were not only troubles with the people in the United States but with surrounding countries as well. One major thing to happen was the Spanish American War also known as the Splendid Little War because it only lasted four months. This war was between Spain and the United States. It also involved Cuba who was under the rule of the Spanish at the time. Another war that was occurring was the Philippine War. The Philippines are located west of California whereas Cuba is located near Florida. Many different problems arose because of the Philippine War including the United States buying the Philippines but then deciding to annex it.
One thing that came out of the relations with other countries was the Panama canal. The panama canal was originally started by the French but completed by the United States. The Canal became beneficial for many countries as it became an easier way to trade. It benefited Panama greatly as well. Lastly, the Open door policy was with China for trade. Remember, the United States implemented the Chinese exclusion act, were demeaning towards Asian Americans, implemented the Gentleman's agreement towards the Japanese, but saw benefits in capital gain. Due to the fact that Natives were still not considered citizens, they can fit in as a tie with another country. During this time the people of the United States were still not fair to them and still actively tried to assimilate them and rid them of their culture. The Natives were still being killed relentlessly by the United States, an example is the wounded knee massacre. |
