What was FDR's New Deal? |
Due to the Great Depression, the United States was in a financial mess and the citizens of the country were all struggling, some more than others. Franklin D Roosevelt tried to counter this with the New Deal. The New Deal was a series of different programs intended to boost the economy in the United States and provided jobs for many. There was one act that directly affected the Natives in the country, the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. This act conserved Native land and resources and gave Natives to right to form their own business, something that the Natives should not have had to have an act implemented to have, but was beneficial. The Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act of 1936 is very similar to the Indian Reorganization Act but just more specified for Oklahoma.
In the New Deal there was one deal that did directly affect a portion of the Latinx community, the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration. This administration was to provide relief to the workforce in Puerto Rico. This was the only 'deal' directly connected to Latinx but they did benefit from two programs, the Civilian Conservation Corps and Work Project Administration. These two programs provided many jobs in the United States. There were no 'deals' directly related to Asian-Pacific Americans and they still received strong anti-immigrant sentiments. However, although the entire community did not benefit, there is one Asian-Pacific American who was able to find resources in the Work Project Administration and continued his artistry. |
