What was the Indian Removal Act? |
At the time Andrew Jackson was president and he did not view the Natives in a good manner. He regarded Natives as savages and focused on the attacks the Natives did without focusing on the why behind it. While in office he passed the Indian Removal Act. This act would change the lives of many natives and in particular those that were a part of the "5 Civilized Tribes". This act did not stand alone in removing the natives from their homes and committing even more genocide against them but rather the Treaty of New Echota solidified the move. This move is known as the Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears was a long and hard journey for many Natives and many Natives died in the process. These Natives were being forced to relocate to what is known today as Oklahoma. Andrew Jackson believed this was the best possible choice for Natives and could be the only way the Americans and Natives could live in peace.
