What were the relations between the Natives and the colonists?
|
In the beginning, both the Natives and the colonists were curious about one another. Both sides wanted to know more about one another. However, this intrinsic curiosity did not last for a very long time. The Natives helped colonists but the colonists demanded more and more and were gold and land hungry. Soon enough, the colonists began treating the Natives as if they were not people and even used them as slaves.
The narrative behind Thanksgiving is that the Natives and Pilgrims came together for a large feast as a sign of peace ... this is not the case. The Pilgrims celebrated with a big feast after any 'successful' battle of killing whole tribes of Natives. An example of this mass massacre is the Cochecho Massacre. Now, the Natives were not defenseless. The Natives led many battles against the colonists as they realized the Colonists were not treating them with the same respect they had been giving them. This led to many deaths on both sides. An example of a battle is the pueblo revolt. |
