What is the Jones Act? |
Latinx have been in the states for quite some time as Mexico was once the western half of the United States until the Mexican - American War. However, they were still not considered citizens of the United States because of the provisions to the Naturalization Act in 1870.
After the Spanish - American war, Puerto Rico became a United States Territory and then the Jones Act was implemented. The Jones Act has been causing problems for the Puerto Ricans as of recently. The Jones Act made the status of Puerto Rico to that of a colonized territory. El Congreso Mexicanista, helped the Texas Mexicans of the time. It helped to ensure their rights were not infringed upon. Another name for the people that this group fought for is Tejanos. The Cuban presence in the United States also began to increase as the United States started hiring people to help with their cigar factories, a product that Cuba is known for. The Platt Amendment also affected the Cubans as it was the amendment that helped weigh the idea of removing the State's military forces from Cuba. Many Latinx that came to the United States worked in factories or were migrant workers. Migrant workers are people that move around to work on farms depending on the season. |
