What was the Alamo? |
Slavery was a big problem within the states. With the idea of manifest destiny the colonists believed they had a right to the land to the west and with this, the right to govern over the people there. However, if they were not white, they were not able to be apart of the governing body.
Slavery in Mexico was legal until they won their independence from Spain. After they won their independence in 1810, they abolished slavery in their country. This made the colonists who had moved to the Texas region frustrated. Colonists had moved to Texas for the natural resources and they enjoyed the use of slavery. When Mexico abolished it, the Colonists became so frustrated they decided to fight for Texas's independence. They fought many battles but the most notable one that people remember is the battle at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. It is important at this time to distinguish a new category of people called Tejanos. Tejanos are people with Mexican ancestry who are from Texas. There are many different categories of people with Latino ancestry. For example, to be Latino a person has to have ancestry from Latin America. |
